Theme essay

My idea for my concentration is the exploration of human emotions and how they are conveyed in different ways. I demonstrated my idea in my work by using portraits as a vehicle for each emotion I wanted to incite. I also used my knowledge and skills of basic art principles such as complementary colors, light and shade, and mark making to intensify the emotion in my audience.

I have created a few pieces that express my theme. The first is a colored pencil drawing of a woman who resembles a peacock, and she is screaming, expressing an emotion of anger. Similarly, my next piece is another colored pencil drawing of woman that resembles a tree, expressing happiness, but I used contrasting colors to create a more interesting feeling. My next piece is a graphite piece that is of another girl, expressing a content mood, kind of pensive. My next piece is a self-portrait that I drew with graphite, and I tried to create an emotion of worry.  Another piece that I created is a colored pencil drawing of a man with red hair and skin, and I was trying to show conflicting emotions of anger but also understanding by using red’s compliment; green, as the background color. My next piece is a charcoal drawing of a girl, and it expresses an emotion of frustration, and I use dramatic lighting to get that mood across. Another piece I did is an acrylic self-portrait, but I used the movie Black Swan as inspiration for it. Another piece I've created is an acrylic painting of a mermaid that shows a kind of content mood. My last piece is another self-portrait but I used different blues as the main colors for my skin and the background, and I was trying to express a kind of sour and pessimistic mood, which is why I added lemons to the painting.

For these pieces, I used acrylic, charcoal, graphite, and colored pencil. I used acrylic because I like to be able to blend colors easily, and also acrylic is very vibrant, which adds to the intensity of each painting. I used charcoal to take advantage of the way you can create intense high lights and shadows. I used colored pencils because I was able to create precise marks as well as simulate different textures.

I chose this theme because I wanted to share how I view emotions and how they are expressed, and also so viewers would think twice about emotion and what it means to express them and the effect they have on the person expressing them as well as people around them. I found it interesting that I was able to fuel some of my pieces with personal emotion rather than just creating a piece that would display an emotion I chose.

In conclusion, I have created a number of pieces that help express my theme, which is an exploration of human emotion and how it is conveyed. I have used different mediums to help create moods for each piece such as charcoal, acrylic, and colored pencil. I think my theme is important for viewers to think about because emotions are very interesting, and it is easy to overlook them.
