Well I really like how this turned out seeing as I've never done any portraits with water color. The neck and chin are way to long though. I tried to fix my eyes by pulling the flesh tones up under the eyes, and then I made the iris' a little bigger as well. I still like my graphite one better... I was more daring while painting this because I used blues and purples and reds!
This is my clay skull. I had to start from scratch because I forgot to put my first skull (which was a lot better) in the safe confines of my locker, and unfortunately it was lost in the depths of the ceramics room.
Well we started off drawing the parts of a skull so that's why the eyes are so freaking dark and why the cheek bones are so prominent. The chin is too long as is the neck. I liked it better when it was a skull... I would just like to note that this is NOT a self portrait...
I really do like this self portrait. At first I wasn't doing the assignment correctly because I was adding detail rather than just adding dark spots in where the eyes or lips should be. So I restarted and I really liked the approach of this assignment because this is probably one of the most accurate self portraits I've done. One thing that is really bugging me though is the eye on the left. It's either too big or too high or both. It didn't look that bad before I added the iris and pupil... Oh well. It's weird though because I think that eye is actually slightly higher than my other eye. You would think that faces are symmetrical, but they really aren't most of the time, and the people that are considered beautiful are usually the people that have almost symmetrical faces. Just an odd thought.
Last week we did a lot with skulls in preparation for next week which will be self portraits. Even though I work on faces constantly, the different exercises that we did this week helped with proportion and the facial structure. Also, the clay skulls that we made were kind of like the drawings that we did of the skulls in the boxes; making something round-ish out of something square.
AP kids are supposed to be doing self portraits in any medium except pencil. For this one, I used chalk. I experimented a lot because I didn't want to just use brown, yellow, and orange because that wouldn't look that great. You can see a lot more colors than just those three when you look at skin, hair, eyes, etc. so I tried to use all of the colors I had. It looks pretty crazy, but I won't get better if I don't experiment and try new things!
I should have put this on here a while ago, but I kept forgetting. This exercise was very difficult for me. I don't use water colors a lot, so I was a bit inexperienced there. I did either 9 or 10 of these, and didn't really like any of them. I guess it's difficult for me to paint something like this where there isn't really any subject. I experimented a lot and
We've been painting with water colors. I'm a bit rusty, and apples are most definitely not my forte. I've made progress in the past three days though!
